the before trilogy
richard linklater, 1995-2023
recommended for james
if you like listening to podcasts, you’d probably enjoy this one because so much of it is just two strangers having deep, natural conversations after meeting on a train. it captures uncertainty, longing, dreams, the past and future, and all the feelings you can’t quite say out loud, making the relationship feel incredibly intimate as it slowly builds.
content note: sexual content, explicit language, substance use

martin once recommended a brothakupa song, so i think he’d like this one aswell.
content note: explicit language
vagalumes
pollo, 2012
recommended for all of cortis and coer
“vagalumes” is a song about wanting to make someone smile, turning dreams into reality, and finding the little things that brighten life. i chose this song because it carries a light, dreamy, and hopeful message about believing in your dreams and doing your best to make moments more special. i hope you like this choice and the message behind it.
notting hill
julia roberts, 1999
recommended for martin
i know notting hill is pretty popular and he might’ve already seen it, but it made me think of him because of the way he talks about wanting to love and be loved. it’s a story about vulnerability, uncertainty, and choosing love even when two people come from completely different worlds, with this quiet yearning that feels so human. it’s one of my favorite movies, and i think martin might connect with the way it shows that love can be awkward and painful, but still worth choosing. <3
content note: sexual references, explicit language, celebrity scandal themes
sagmeister & walsh: beauty
phaidon publishing, 2018
recommended for martin
i see martin as the kind of person who can take in and appreciate his surroundings anywhere; in nature, in a concrete jungle, or even in their dorms. this book delves into how beauty is important for something to function well, and i think martin would like that.
content note: provocative imagery
ready player one
ernest cline, 2011
recommended for all of cortis
the book is set in a 2045 dystopia where people spend most of their time in a virtual world, following an easter egg hunt whose winner gains ownership of the game. it’s a fun, easy read with high stakes, tons of 1980s pop culture references, and themes like technology, corporate greed, and pollution; i think martin especially might enjoy it because of the sci-fi and rock elements.
content note: explicit language, violence, dark themes, mild sexual content
think it over
new constellations, 2022
recommended for keonho
super upbeat, and i find her vocal tone very satisfying to listen to. but also because keonho has the most similar music taste to me and i love this song so i think he might too.
angel densetsu
norihiro yagi, 1996
recommended for james
it’s a lighthearted slice of life comedy with a hint of romance. the running joke might get a little repetitive as the manga goes on, but the work never stops being engaging. all the characters, specially the main protagonist are very likeable. it’s an enjoyable read and the best option to breeze through and put your mind at ease in the midst of a busy schedule.
love love (love love)

the picture of dorian gray
oscar wilde, 1890
recommended for keonho
i’ve seen keonho be quite interested in queer novels nowadays. oscar wilde, as a queer writer, has done such an amazing job with this story. the layers to human identity and relationships that are encountered in this book are simply mind-opening, and i think keonho would love the mystery behind it all.
content note: suicide, self-harm, murder, violence, substance abuse
craft in the real world
matthew salesses, 2021
recommended for all of cortis
it’s a non-fiction book about creative writing that questions who made the rules of “good” storytelling in the first place and why certain conventions are treated as universal. as a youngcreatorcrew that writes their own music, i think cortis would enjoy its mix of craft, cultural criticism, and ideas about power, and hopefully gain some new insights from it.
