burn after reading
joel and ethan coen, 2008
recommended for james
it’s a satire of spy movies and a comedy of errors, and i think james would enjoy it, especially since it stars george clooney and brad pitt. pitt is at his most hilarious here, alongside snatch, and while the humor is more american than british, it’s cynical and witty, so i think he’d enjoy it quite a bit.
content note: explicit language, sexual content, brief violence
‘02 (deluxe edition)
pino, 2026
recommended for james
this r&b album is so good, especially “forbidden love” and “knockin’.” they remind me a little of “butterflies” by brent faiyaz, so i think james might enjoy pino too.

notting hill
roger michell, 1999
recommended for james
i feel like james lowkey enjoys romcoms and seems genuinely open to exploring different genres. plus, it’s hugh grant, and i just feel like he’d really enjoy that soft, charming kind of vibe :)

twisted wonderland
yana toboso, 2025
recommended for james
james has mentioned that he watches anime, so i'm recommending one that was released as an adaptation from one of my favourite games. season 2 is coming soon this year too.
content note: mild violence
mr. bean’s holiday
steve bendelack, 2007
recommended for james
as james is quite into movies, cinematography and directing, i thought he would love the mr bean universe, specifically, mr bean's holiday. the character in the movie has a quirkiness and eccentric nature to him. plus, this particular movie has created a lot of iconic internet memes.

what you heard
sonder, 2019
recommended for james
since james really likes brent faiyaz, i'm pretty sure he would love sonder since brent is the lead vocalist.

no. 6
kenji nagasaki, 2011
recommended for james
since he likes emotional anime like violet evergarden, he might enjoy no. 6 as well. it has a dystopian setting, but the main focus is on the characters and their relationship. it’s also pretty short, so it’s easy to get through.
content note: government oppression, state violence, medical abuse
the sixth sense
m. night shyamalan, 1999
recommended for james
from what james has said, i think we have similar taste in movies. this is one of my favorites so i hope he would like it.
content note: suicide and self-harm, frightening imagery, violence
the good place
michael schur, 2016
recommended for james
i feel like this show is so james coded. the humor is top notch and the way it brings up philosophical discussions about the afterlife and life in general. what makes a person good or bad, etc.. i think james would find it very interesting and funny.
content note: mild language, sexual content, adult humor
past lives
celine song, 2023
recommended for james
this film has a lot of what-if moments and i feel like people who have watched it have different interpretations by the end of the story. i don't think james is the type of person who dwells in the past so i wanted to know his take on this one.
content note: explicit language, substance use, mature relationship themes
sherlock
mark gatiss, 2010
recommended for james
sherlock is one of the best series i’ve ever watched because everything, from the cinematography to the dialogue, feels so cleverly designed. since james likes christopher nolan movies and seems into the mcu, i think he’d really enjoy its layered storytelling and benedict cumberbatch as sherlock.
content note: violence, psychological distress, substance use
call me by your name
luca guadagnino, 2017
recommended for james
i really admire how james views life and the way he thinks. call me by your name is such a thought provoking film + it's so beautifully written and shot. i would like to hear what he thinks of it. especially his interpretation of my favorite quote "is it better to speak or to die?"
content note: age and power imbalance, sexual content, heartbreak
monkey man
dev patel, 2024
recommended for james
based on his ‘letterboxd’ i think this movie suit his taste and the fight scenes are very well executed
content note: graphic violence, explicit language, sexual content and drug use
precious
depeche mode, 2005
recommended for james
i just think this really suits james a lot, and it’s funny that it was released in his birth year. it’s a dark, emotional synth-pop track with a steady electronic pulse, nostalgic lyrics, and a deeply melancholic apology at its center, which feels perfect if you love atmospheric music with deep synths and a moody, beautiful vibe.
american honey
andrea arnold, 2016
recommended for james
james often talks about his love for film and cinema, so i wanted to recommend one of my favorites. it beautifully captures the duality of young adulthood through romance, poverty, abuse, comedy, and naturalism, all while feeling messy, raw, and strangely beautiful. the cinematography and soundtrack are also incredible, and i think james would really appreciate how authentic it feels.
content note: sexual content, explicit language, substance abuse
masters of death
olivie blake, 2023
recommended for james
i feel like he would enjoy the banter of the characters and kind of the general oddness of the book. i also feel like he’d value the underlying meaning of the book and the physiological sci-fi genre.
