yi yi
edward yang, 2000
recommended for james
yiyi is a taiwanese classic that—dare i say—features one of the best existential dialogues of modern cinema. although it differs from the genre of movies james has mentioned thus far, i think it may resonate with him not only because he grew up in a taiwanese family, but also because the film unravels like a universal testament to human life. you’ll see what i mean when you watch it—i highly recommend it for coers too!!

takahiro miki, 2024

martin is someone who loves love and i think this movie shows it well and how happy it makes a person, so i think he would enjoy it even tho it's a bit sad.

parasite
bong joon ho, 2019
recommended for all of cortis & coer
this movie a family navigating the class system while appropriating it themselves. i also recommend this movie for coer too as this film can easily switch from comedy to a horror film in an instant. the plot twist is absolutely insane, so i totally recommend it.

the notebook
nick cassavetes, 2004
recommended for juhoon
i genuinely feel like juhoon would love the notebook because it explores love in so many forms: first love, separation, longing, devotion, and the way feelings stay with you as life changes. knowing he’s recommended movies like the before trilogy, i think he’d really appreciate how emotional and intimate it is, especially the focus on relationships, memory, and all the little details that make a connection meaningful.
content note: sexual content, war violence, aging and memory loss themes
all about lily chou chou
sunji iwai, 2001
recommended for martin
i wanted to recommend this strictly from an aesthetic, conceptual, and narrative standpoint. the film uses music as a coping mechanism and escape from a harsh reality, balancing a beautiful dream-pop soundtrack with a painful look at bullying, isolation, and the psychological effects of peer abuse. it’s a very heavy watch, but i think martin might find the contrast between its beautiful aesthetic and brutal reality profoundly impactful.

michael haneke, 1997
recommended for james
yufan is a huge cinephile and has recommended movies with similar genres, this one is extremely psychological!! the type of movie that makes u feel intentionally disgusted. the 1997 version has interesting filmmaking techniques, i’m 100% sure that if yufan hasn’t seen it yet, he would love this one. he seems like the type of person who enjoys being intrigued by movies…

the before trilogy
richard linklater, 1995-2023
recommended for james
if you like listening to podcasts, you’d probably enjoy this one because so much of it is just two strangers having deep, natural conversations after meeting on a train. it captures uncertainty, longing, dreams, the past and future, and all the feelings you can’t quite say out loud, making the relationship feel incredibly intimate as it slowly builds.

project hail mary
phil lord & christopher miller, 2026

notting hill
julia roberts, 1999
recommended for martin
i know notting hill is pretty popular and he might’ve already seen it, but it made me think of him because of the way he talks about wanting to love and be loved. it’s a story about vulnerability, uncertainty, and choosing love even when two people come from completely different worlds, with this quiet yearning that feels so human. it’s one of my favorite movies, and i think martin might connect with the way it shows that love can be awkward and painful, but still worth choosing. <3

based on a true story about an airplane crash in los andes, with a strong focus on friendship and survival. i think all the boys could connect with it, and the friendship aspect especially made me think of martin.
