maybe they’ve already watched coraline, but i like it soooo much that i had to recommend it :) it’s a dark fantasy animated movie about a girl who discovers a seemingly perfect parallel world, only to realize something sinister is hiding behind it.
i’m still here
walter salles, 2024
recommended for all of cortis
ainda estou aqui, or “i’m still here,” follows eunice paiva and her family after her husband disappears during brazil’s military dictatorship. i think cortis might like this emotional story about family, memory, loss, resilience and the fight for justice.
content note: military dictatorship, political repression, forced disappearance, grief, trauma
the sound of music
robert wise, 1965
recommended for all of cortis
a classic musical that never gets old! this movie shaped my childhood with iconic songs including yodeling (i'm sure Cortis would love that one), and it really emphasizes the power of love and family in the face of tyranny.
content note: antisemitism, depictions of war, mild violence

city of god
kátia lund, 2002
recommended for coer
this movie is set in a community shaped by poverty, drug dealing and gang violence involving children. it’s raw, cut-throat and filled with shocking scenes, but the storytelling and cinematography pull you deeply into the characters’ world. i wouldn’t recommend it to anyone who gets stressed or queasy easily.
content note: graphic violence, sexual content, substance abuse, intense mature themes
paprika
satoshi kon, 2006
recommended for all of cortis
it’s a very out of the box anime that was the inspiration for the more popular movie inception (it’s better than that imo), and has a lot of abstract concepts that make you think a lot about the barriers between dreams and reality.
content note: sexual assault, violence, nudity
the holdovers
alexander payne, 2023
recommended for coer
this movie reminds people the importance of surrounding yourself with the grace and love, how being around the correct people can make a change in your perception of the world. you are never alone in a planet so full of individuals you just have to find the right ones.
content note: pervasive language, drug use, brief sexual content
the worst person in the world
joachim trier, 2018
recommended for coer
the movie shows that making mistakes and doubting your life doesn’t make you a bad person. it’s a sad story about being human and discovering yourself.
content note: graphic sexual content, substance use, intense mature themes
mid90s
jonah hill, 2018
recommended for all of cortis
it has that raw, youthful, and carefree energy that matches their vibe. it’s about friendship, growing up, finding where you belong, and making memories with people around you, while also showing the messy parts of being young. plus, the skate culture, ’90s aesthetic, music, and laid-back atmosphere make it feel like the kind of movie they’d appreciate.
content note: explicit language, suicide, drinking/drug use, sexual content, mature scenes involving a minor
perks of being a wallflower

memoir of a snail
adam elliot, 2024
recommended for james
this film felt like a comfort zone and source of understanding during a difficult time. it’s a sensitive, artistic story about how even unexpected connections can give meaning to everything and make you appreciate the little things and people who come into your life :)
content note: intense mature themes, graphic violence, substance abuse, moderate language
式日 (ritual)
hideaki anno, 2000
recommended for juhoon
“do you know what tomorrow is? tomorrow’s my birthday!” 🎂
she repeats this ritual every day, always giving herself another tomorrow to look forward to while escaping a reality she can’t face. since juhoon liked one million yen girl, he might connect with its quiet loneliness and desire to connect, plus the pretty framing, mixed-media animation and camcorder footage.
content note: suicidal ideation, mental health struggles, substance use, mature themes
drowning love
yuki yamoto, 2016
recommended for juhoon
drowning love follows teenage model natsume and the mysterious kou as they bond over their yearning for freedom while navigating romance, heartache and who they want to become. i think juhoon would enjoy its calming visuals and soundtrack, plus his shared background in modeling with the main character.
content note: sexual violence, stalking, suicide, physical violence, abusive relationships
the second mother
anna muylaert, 2015
recommended for all of cortis
it’s a film where you can feel what the characters are feeling as well as how social class inequality is present in the daily lives of those who live with it and how it affects them.
content note: drug use
flow
gints zilbalodis, 2024
recommended for all of cortis
one of the most beautiful and touching movies i’ve ever watched. without a single word, it says so much about friendship, survival and learning to move forward together. made by a small team in blender and now an oscar winner, it’s a reminder to follow your heart and create something you truly love <3
monster
hirokazu koreda, 2023
recommended for juhoon
you once said the thing you wanted most in life was "peace" and that's quite the message of this movie. to someone with such a sensitive heart and soul, who feels too much but can barely put into words, this movie is perfect for you.
content note: mature themes, brief suggestive content
